HCA CTE Courses

The CTE Courses at HCA are the stepping stones to your career in the Medical Field!

Why are CTE Courses Important? 

• Articulated with Delta College - If you earn a C or higher, you can receive college credit for them! This means that when you decide to go to college, you already have completed college courses on your transcript that can help you finish faster. 
• Medical Assistant Certifications - The things you learn in the CTE Courses will help you pass the Medical Assistant Certificate Exam when you turn 18. Passing these exams can lead you to a job in the medical field right out of high school! 
• Hands-On - The CTE Courses are hands-on! You will practice the things that you are learning in real life. You will take blood pressures, learn to tape ankles, you will practice your office skills. In a CTE classroom, you will be out of your seat and moving around, trying things, learning new skills and learning about the different health professions. 
• Reinforce Non-CTE Courses - The things that you are learning in math, English, science and even PE are all reinforced in the CTE Classroom. In the CTE Classroom, you will put the learning you do in other classrooms to practical use and learn how those subjects translate to the real world. 

The HCA CTE Courses: 

• Intro to Health Careers - This is the first course in the HCA CTE pathway. This course will introduce students to the educational and professional requirements for health-related careers, in addition to teaching general skills such as job seeking, teamwork, and communication. Within this class, students will also study safety and infection control, human growth and development, a brief overview of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and legal and ethical responsibilities. 
• Medical Office - This course will provide an overview of the basic operation of a Medical Office and current technology. It will focus on general office skills, terminology, and managing patient and medical data with the use of computers and related technology. 
• Medical Terminology - This course is designed to develop a basic medical vocabulary by recognition of roots, prefixes, and suffixes as structured to form medical terminology. Emphasis is placed on the medical vocabulary, the fluency 
• Sports Medicine - This course is designed as an introduction to the field of athletic training. The course emphasizes athletic training competencies including the prevention, evaluation, immediate care, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.This course will teach the student how to recognize an emergency and how to respond. The student will be prepared to make appropriate decisions regarding first aid care and how to provide care for injuries or sudden illness until professional medical help arrives. Upon successful completion of this course the student will receive American Red Cross certification for Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED. This course is designed for students interested in fields such as athletic training, physical therapy, medicine, fitness, exercise physiology, kinesiology, nutrition and other sports medicine related fields.
• Medical Assistant - Students will be able to acquire the direct patient contact skills and technical knowledge required to work in the “back office” of a medical clinic or related health care facility. Students will be able to demonstrate competencies in medical surgical asepsis, assisting with physical examination, minor office surgery, electrocardiography, administration of medicine, laboratory skill, assisting with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and specialized medical practices. At the end of the course, students who pass  will be eligible to interview for an externship. After 120 hours of externship, students will be eligible to sit for a national Medical Assistant Certification Test.
•  Pharmacy Technician - This course is designed to prepare students for employment in various pharmacy settings. The class consists of seven core module study areas including: medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pharmacy law, metric and apothecary systems, drug requirements, and dispensing prescriptions. Upon successful completion of this course, students will qualify for registration with the California State Board of Pharmacy and the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. At the end of the course, students who pass  will be eligible to interview for an externship. 
• CTE Fieldwork - The purpose of the CTE Fieldwork course is to provide practical internship/externship experience linked with information and learning from courses taken at HCA. 
• Work Experience - When a paid position is in the health industry, a student's Work Experience course can provide practical work experience linked with information and learning from courses taken at HCA.
