Masonry

    PROGRAM BACKGROUND

The Jane Frederick Masonry Program was established in 2006. Mr. Miller, the masonry program coordinator, and teacher introduced the program to SUSD in order to provide students with basic knowledge of masonry skills and other trade-related fields.

While masonry is the primary focus of instruction, students experience various hands-on applications that provide them with a well rounded working experience.  Additionally, Mr. Miller provides students with forklift skills that lead to students becoming certified to operate heavy machinery.

JFHS students are encouraged to work towards completing the SUSD graduation requirements while being provided with a real-world, hands-on working experience that can lead to masonry apprenticeships for those who demonstrate the aptitude.

    SCHOOL & CAREER CONNECTION

Francisco Dominguez was enrolled in the masonry program at JFHS for two years. During that time he participated in many competitions and learned as much as he could about the trade. During a recent competition, Francisco's skill was noticed by the Local 3 Brick Layers Union.  They were impressed by his skill set and not only offered Francisco a job but also granted him 1.5 years of apprenticeship time for the work he did while at Jane Frederick. Great job Francisco!

    COMPETITIONS

JFHS students have competed in and hosted several "Brick by Brick" competitions. Exposure to these competitions and the trade field provides students with an opportunity to focus on graduation with a pathway to the work world and a positive future.
