  •

Although there are challenges with you child learning from home, parent involvement is most important. Here are some tips on working with your child in their education and health…

    Encouragement in School Work:

    · Use praise by telling them what it is that they did well or are trying to do well.

    · Use encouragement often especially if they are struggling to do their work.

    · Reward them with a snack after completing some of their work or at the end of the day

    · Ask questions on what they are learning and have them describe it to you.

    · Have them read aloud daily for 20 minutes to help their reading fluency and comprehension

    · Engage in playing with your child outdoors or with games when they finish their school work and homework this will reinforce their wanting to do their work. Play relieves stress. It’s good for you and them.

    · Reassure them and emphasize that they will be ok and well during these times.

    · If they seem overwhelmed with their school work, have them take breaks and don’t push them if they seem stressed.

    · Limit video game and social media use to 20 minutes a day

    Make Time for Your Child:

    · Children may need extra attention to talk about their concerns, fears, and questions so support them.

    · Reassure them and emphasize that they will be ok and well during these times.

    · Remind them adults are there to keep them safe and healthy.

    · Be cautious when talking about the COVID -19 issues, it may either increase or decrease their anxiety.

    · It is important that they have someone to listen to them and take time for them.

    · Have house meetings to discuss getting along, family structure, and resolve problems.

    · Tell your children you love them and if you feel comfortable, give them plenty of affection.

    Avoid Blaming:

    · When tension is high try not to blame anyone, either certain cultures or stereotyping.

    · Be aware of comments of other adults in your family and remind them of home values.

Monitor the news and social media:

    · Try to limit the news so your child does not worry or become fearful.

    · Talk to your child about some news or information on the internet which may or may not be factual.

    · Maintain a normal routine daily and keep them busy always. It gets their mind off things and helps them stay focused on school work.
