Anti-Bullying & Unity Day

  • Unity: noun, plural u•ni•ties - The state of being one; oneness of mind, feeling; concord, harmony, or agreement.

    The PLUS Program works to improve school climates across Stockton Unified School District. One of the issues we tackle is BULLYING. We join efforts with millions of people across the world in Unity Day each year. Unity day was created by Pacer's National Bullying Prevention Center (http://www.pacer.org/bullying/nbpm/unity-day.asp)

    UNITY Day Information

    Make it ORANGE and make it end! What are your true colors when it comes to bullying? If you care about safe and supportive schools and communities make your color ORANGE on Unity Day. That’s the day everyone can come together—in schools, communities, and online — and send one large ORANGE message of support, hope, and unity to show that we are united against bullying and united for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion.

    Suggested Activities for schools

    • Wear ORANGE! It can be an orange T-shirt, tie, hat, wristband, socks, or even shoelaces.
    • Sign an ORANGE banner. “Together Against Bullying, United for Respect, Kindness, Acceptance, and Inclusion.” banners are a great way for students at your school to make a powerful visual statement of support on Unity Day. Hang the banner in a prominent place where kids can sign it and show that they care.
    • NYAR Bullying Survey: Through the PLUS Program website you can issue a simple survey about bullying. These research-based surveys have been developed by a team at the National Youth-At-Risk Center at Georgia Southern University. Use these surveys to develop a deeper understanding of bullying on your campus.
    • Hand out ORANGE “unity bracelets.” 
    • Set up a “unity” table at lunch. Create a visual UNITY statement! Students can write a message on an ORANGE strip of paper. The paper links are then connected to create one long chain which visually represents uniting for a common cause.
    • Hold a classroom UNITY discussion. Define the word "Unity".
      1. Have students look up the definition of “unity.” According to Webster’s English Dictionary:
    • Unity Dance: Dance, unite — and make a statement against bullying — by holding a Unity Dance at recess or after school.
