Pathway Award

  • The Biliteracy Pathway Recognitions are established to recognize third grade, sixth grade, and eighth-grade students who have demonstrated progress toward proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in one or more languages, in addition to English.

    Purposes

    1. To encourage students to study languages, continue their language studies, and become multilingual.
    2. To raise awareness about the State Seal of Biliteracy requirements and ensure that multilingual students have the information they need to meet these requirements and earn the State Seal of Biliteracy upon graduation from high school.
    3. To certify progress toward biliteracy.
    4. To prepare students with twenty-first-century skills.
    5. To recognize and promote world language instruction in public schools.
    6. To strengthen intergroup relationships, affirm the value of diversity, and honor the multiple cultures, histories, and languages of a community.
    7. To implement principles one and four of the English Learner (EL) Roadmap Policy by creating an aligned and articulated pathway to multilingualism that embraces students’ home and community languages and cultures as assets.

    Currently, the Biliteracy Pathways are established at our Bilingual and Dual Immersion School Sites: Hong-Kingston, McKinley, Pittman Elementary, and also at PYA.

     

    Pathway for Grade 3

    Students must choose one of the following three choices:

    1. Write a 1-page summary of his/her experience in learning a new language, written in the new language.
    2. Make an oral presentation in the new language, describing why he/she wants to learn a new language.
    3. Maintain a reading log of five grade-appropriate books, read independently in the new language. (log must be signed by a certificated staff member)

     

    Pathway for Grade 6

    Students must meet the requirement below and choose one of the following three choices:

    REQUIREMENT: Earn a score of at or above “standard nearly met” on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) in English Language Arts.

    1. Write a 1-2 page paper in your second language, explaining why bilingualism is important to you personally, to your community, and to the world (paper must meet site principal approval).
    2. Make an oral presentation in your second language. Identify a career where bilingualism is important and explain why it is beneficial (presentation must meet site principal approval).
    3. Maintain a reading log of ten grade-appropriate books, read independently in English and ten grade-appropriate books in a language other than English. (log must be signed by a certificated staff member).

     

    Pathway for Grade 8

    Students must meet the requirement below and choose one of the following two choices:

    REQUIREMENT: Earn a score of at or above “standard met” on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) in English Language Arts.

    1. Write a 2-page essay in your second language. Describe what you learned from attending two cultural events for the second language and culture being studied (essay must meet site principal approval).
    2. Make an oral presentation in your second language, convincing your audience that knowing multiple languages is important to you personally, to your community, and to the world (presentation must meet site principal approval).
